Mayor's Message

Mayor Alan HylandWe welcome you to "the island", a quiet town in the middle of a very diverse agricultural area and home to Pinto MacBean, our mascot. Bow Island, the "Bean Capital of West Canada" is surrounded by irrigated farming where we have very diverse crops such as beans, potatoes, sugar beets, dill, spearmint, and a very progressive dry land farming economy.

In February 1909, Old Glory, the first gas well in Alberta was drilled west of town. We became known as the town that lights the west, supplying Lethbridge and Calgary with natural gas.

The Island has tremendous facilities, such as a ball diamond complex, swimming pool, curling rink, arena, and the best 9-hole golf course in Alberta. You can find activities for all members of your family.

The best thing about Bow Island is the people. We have volunteers in all aspects of life carrying the feeling of looking out for thy neighbor than only exists in a small town. In Bow Island, strangers are just friends we have not yet met. We welcome you to our town. I am sure your time here will be most pleasant.

I hope you enjoy Bow Island!
-Mayor Alan Hyland
